It's interesting to learn why certain people care about certain things. Why do American's love football? Why do Italians love food? We tend to love and care about the things our families loved and cared about. The best thing that I have learned about kids is that they love everyone and everything unconditionally. Never before would you ever catch me thinking twice about a snail, but ever since my kids started caring about our new found friend "Buddy" none of us can seem to get him off our minds. We love him, we've learned how to take care of him, and now I have more pictures him on my phone than I do my own family. (shh. no one needs to know that.) Turns out, Buddy's favorite food is apple rinds. After reading lots about them, we learned that snails have a very healthy diet. They eat spinach, leaves, apples, and potatoes. I wonder what kinds of things snails care about?
Meet our new class pet, BUDDY! We have all been very eager and willing to learn as much as we possibly can about snails so that we can care for him. We made him a moist home with plenty of ventilation, with lots of room to roam around. Meet our other new friends, Henry and Mudge, and Camilla and Callie. The more we care about them and for them, the more we see them growing and growing and growing. Callie is kind of shy, and off to a slow start but we know she is still growing. She hasn't decided that she's ready yet to pop out and meet us, but we will be patiently waiting and hoping she starts to feel brave.
As a class, we each got what we needed to plant our very first seeds. We started with one cup of dirt, and two very different types of seeds. The students were instructed to take it home, put it in a sunny place indoors and water it daily. That's it. The point of this project is mostly to learn about seeds and watch them grow, but the other more important lesson we are learning about is how to CARE! I could tell that our kids really and truly do care about our tiny little seeds. It seems like such a small and minuscule thing. But I can tell they care about their plants because they come in every morning and are EXCITED about them, and thats what I care about. If you don't care about your seed, or you don't care for your seed, it will not grow. In the same way, us humans need to be cared about, and cared for by each other so that we can grow. Its very hard for us to succeed in this harsh, dangerous world when we don't feel like anyone cares about us. Once they care, it becomes meaningful. Once they know |
