This week, my fabulous readers have been working on building their STAMINA during our read to self. Make sure to remind your wonderful superstars to complete their reading logs each week. They will be checked on Friday mornings. :)
As our class continues to read, The Tale of Despereaux, we keep stumbling upon words that our class isn't familiar with. Our strategy as a class is to STOP, and write it down. If it appears in our Quote of the Day, we circle it. This way, we can be aware of words we are not certain of and can they search for context clues to help us discover what they mean.
Thanks to my fabulous Technology Guru, we have been googling our new words, and using dictionary.com to find the part of speech and the exact definition as we go. How have you enhanced your vocabulary lately? Our school was lucky enough to receive a Leader in Me grant from the Franklin Covey Association. We are working hard to incorporate each of the 7 Habits into everything we do in order to ensure success.
During our first week of school, we have been working on habit 1: Be Proactive. At the end of each day we "Tell On" one another, which is our way of celebrating and acknowledging our fellow class mates for demonstrating leadership qualities throughout the day. After many days of deliberation, I finally have my classroom job chart up in my room. I decided to make my students actually apply for the job they wanted, giving a first, second and third choice. They had to list previous work experience, and any skills they might have that can help them with the job. Finally, they had to come up with a few sentences to describe why they would be best suited for the job.
Tomorrow, I will announce who has been hired for each position. |
